Interlude: Preparation

“We can’t keep meeting like this. His mother is here again and it’s harder to leave the house now.” Lorde smoothed down her dress, using the motion as an excuse to feel her flat stomach. She still needed to lose a few more pounds before she’d be pre-baby weight though. It was much harder this time around. But her daughter was worth having to start all over.

“She is precisely why I’m here. Were you able to get anything?”

“Yes.” Lorde handed over some papers. “Is this important?”

“Oh my… This is excellent! We’ve been trying to get an itinerary for months. And this was just lying around?”

“It’s her son’s home. Why would she be cautious here?” Lorde sniffed. “But really. This has to be the last time. I can’t risk him seeing you here, Moira!”

The woman smiled. “If this proves fruitful, you will definitely be hearing from us again. You are fighting for your kind, Lorde. Why would you want to stop now that we’re finally getting somewhere?”

“Because I refuse to put my children at risk. You promised -”

Moira shook her head. “I know what I promised. And we will make sure she’s safe.”

The sound of an approaching car had both women pausing.

“You need to leave,” Lorde whispered vehemently. “Now!”

“His staff was easy to infiltrate. The man has no sense of self-preservation.” Moira O’Brien said with a smug expression.

She wanted to wipe that look off the redhead’s face. As if the women’s little group of terrorists would scare Matias King. If she wasn’t so offended, she’d laugh. The fact that she had to work with these people upset her greatly. But they were the tools she needed at the moment and they served their purpose well. And while they used her and powers, she was learning about their leadership and about the people who bankrolled their operation. She would not suffer these fools to live longer than necessary. These self-righteous humans and their hypocrisy. Oh, they hated all things supernatural, except for the people and things that helped them.

She would burn them and everything they owned to the ground. And she would start with Moira. But first…

In a calm voice that belied her rage, she asked, “Why would he worry?”

Moira scowled. “Worry? He should be terrified of what we -”

She gave a humorless laugh. “You think Matias would be scared of you? You are nothing but an insignificant speck to him, easily crushed.” She leaned in closer to the younger woman and savored the fear she saw in her eyes. “If he ever deigned to notice you at all. No, Matty has no reason to be afraid of you. But me?” She sat back and glanced down at her hands. They were cool to the touch at the moment. “That’s a different story completely.”

Oh God Lorde!!? What are you doing?! Why would you trust psychopaths!! And, why do I have to be pining about how adorable you look in that photo? I don’t think I’ll ever stop adoring you, no matter what stupid ass shit you do. 😦

Uh-oh. That’s the lady with the evil eyes we saw in earlier chapters. We still don’t know her name. But she better keep her stinkin’ hands (and evil eyes) off Matias! I want to see him in a future chapter but not because he’s in danger. Although, I wouldn’t mind seeing him squash her like a bug. 😉
