Potty Training

Tony sat, watching Zach tumble around, pretending to be a wolf. The test results came back inconclusive but Brian said that any latent abilities wouldn’t manifest until Zach hit puberty. Tony was worried that it would be too late by then. He was waiting for Riley to come home to talk about maybe enrolling Zach in Eva’s school. Just in case.

“Hey babe.” Riley walked into the room and made a beeline for him only to be ambushed by an excited Zach. “Hello baby,” Riley said to the toddler, picking him up and giving him a hug. He continued to head over to Tony, baby snuggled in his arms.

Tony stood up and leaned in for a quick kiss. “Hey.”

Zach pulled Riley’s face toward him and said, “Dada go peepee.”

Riley raised an eyebrow at Tony, a small smile on his face. “Yeah?” He asked the toddler. “And what about Zach? Did Zach go peepee?”

Zach nodded, a huge grin on his face. Riley raised a hand and gave him a high-five. “That’s my big boy!”

He put Zach down and turned back towards Tony. “Good job.”

They both sat down and watched as their son made a mess with his toys. Tony lifted Riley’s legs onto his lap and removed his shoes.

Riley groaned softly, wiggling his toes, and asked, “How was your day?”

Riley leaned back against the couch and let out a soft sigh as Tony began massaging his feet. While Tony took a break from work to be with Zach, Riley was working on finishing all of his projects.

Tony remembered when their roles were reversed. He couldn’t understand, back then, how Riley could be so content to stay at home all day. He’d been such a fool. Getting to be a part of all of Zach’s firsts was so rewarding. Tiring but rewarding.

“It was good. We peed. A lot.”

Riley laughed and then laughed some more when Zach copied him. The toddler apparently loved the sound of Riley’s laughter and always tried to copy it, even if he had no idea what was so funny.

“This kid. God I love him.”
